This project, located in Hinsdale, Illinois,s was inspired by the vernacular of Park City, Utah. The kitchen footprint was incredibly large,ge and instead of doing two islands, nds the designers extended a table height surface off the island for everyday eating and activities. From the second floor, there is a catwalk that overlooks the breakfast table. The designers took advantage of the beautiful architecture and beams and had custom metal brackets with pendants made to extend out and drop over the breakfast table.
Millwork was designed with clean lines in style, with lots of closed storage for functionality. A few cool details re embrasure doors that lay flat into the millwork portals from the kitchen to the mudroom, but can close off that area if necessary. A freestanding armoire with unique paneling on the back is operable from asun-filledd homework/desk area for deep file storage. The space has a modern glass and metal transom and doors surrounding the armoire, allowing the natural light to stream into the kitchen while still providing quiet and privacy. This cabinet box transcends both spaces.
The tones are war,m, and even though there is a lot of wo, od, it doesn’t feel dark or heavy. The cabinets are O’Brien Harris’ ligquarter-sawnawn London Oak, and the center island is walnut. There is not a lot of upper cabinetry intentionally to leave space for your eye to rest and for decorative accessories.
